As an official Red Cross training partner, Workers Health & Safety Centre (WHSC) is now offering first aid and CPR training to all Ontarians through scheduled in-person instructor-led training sessions.
First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training serve distinct purposes, each focusing on vital lifesaving techniques. First aid is geared towards providing immediate care for injuries, addressing a variety of medical situations. In contrast, CPR is specifically designed to support individuals experiencing cardiac arrest, helping to sustain them until professional help arrives. CPR guidelines include training in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). An estimated 60,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital each year in Canada. Knowing how to use an AED could help save a life.
Participants in WHSC-delivered Red Cross training will learn how to
manage emergency situations, identifying symptoms of a heart attack, and responding appropriately to breathing cessation, bleeding, or head and spine injuries until medical help arrives. Training covers a wide range of topics including:
- respiratory and cardiac arrest
- head and spine injuries
- bone, muscle and joint injuries
- wound care
- poisons including opioids
- as well as airway, medical and environmental emergencies.
