Workers Health & Safety Centre

Prevent occupational disease before it starts

Occupational disease is Ontario’s leading cause of worker death. For workers who survive disease treatment life has its challenges too. The experience leaves no one unscathed.

Those seeking to stop this needless suffering also have their work cut out for them. The link between cause and effect often goes undetected. Workers may be exposed to harmful substances or conditions today and not experience the health effects until years or even decades later.

These two realities make prevention and quality training especially important.

Workers and workplaces need to understand the hazards they face, how exposure can affect worker health and, most importantly, what can be done to eliminate or control those exposures before harm occurs.

That’s what WHSC training is built to do.

As Ontario’s official, government-designated health and safety training centre, WHSC provides practical, evidence-based training designed to help workers, their representatives, supervisors and employers recognize hazards and strengthen prevention in the workplace.

Instructor-led training in virtual classrooms currently available for just $25 or less:

  • Asbestos - $25/participant
Learn about the different types of asbestos, where exposure can occur and the health hazards workers may face. Participants also explore asbestos legislation, methods for identifying and assessing exposure and practical measures for controlling exposure, including required asbestos management programs.

  • Chemical Hazards - $25/participant
Learn how to recognize chemical hazards in the workplace, understand how workers can be exposed and identify measures to eliminate or control exposure. Training also helps participants better understand related legal requirements and workplace practices needed to prevent harmful chemical exposures.

  • GHS WHMIS - $10/participant
Build an understanding of GHS WHMIS requirements for hazardous products used, stored, handled or disposed of at work. Participants explore hazard classifications, labels, safety data sheets and pictograms and how this information can support hazard recognition and effective measures to eliminate or control exposure.

  • Infectious Diseases - $25/participant
Examine different types of infectious diseases, how they’re transmitted and where workers may be exposed. Participants explore practical methods for identifying and assessing hazards along with controls such as isolation precautions, proper cleaning and maintenance.

  • Mould - $25/participant
Learn how mould develops, the conditions that allow it to grow and the potential health effects of exposure. Participants explore practical tools for identifying and assessing mould hazards and how effective action plans can eliminate existing mould and help prevent future contamination.

  • Noise - $25/participant
Develop a stronger understanding of workplace noise, its potential health effects and legal requirements for protecting workers from hazardous sound levels. Participants learn how to identify and assess noise hazards and explore controls ranging from quieter equipment and isolation to sound absorption and appropriate use of hearing protection.

  • Office Biohazards: Viruses, Moulds and Bacteria - $25/participant
Explore how viruses, mould, bacteria and other biological hazards can spread through offices and similar workplaces and affect worker health. Participants learn how to identify and assess potential biohazards and examine controls including ventilation, hygiene practices and other measures designed to prevent transmission.

  • Personal Protective Equipment - $25/participant
Learn about the proper selection, use and care of personal protective equipment when PPE is required for the job. Participants also examine the limitations of PPE and why eliminating or controlling hazards at the source should come before relying on personal protective equipment.

  • Welding Hazards - $25/participant
Examine hazards affecting welders and workers nearby, including hazardous fumes, gases, noise and extreme heat. Participants explore ways to recognize and assess these hazards and practical controls such as local exhaust ventilation and respiratory protection.

Whether you’re dealing with a known workplace exposure, strengthening the knowledge of workplace representatives or looking to prevent occupational disease before it develops, this training can help build the knowledge and skills needed to take action.

Why this training matters

Harmful workplace exposures can come from chemicals, asbestos, noise, biological hazards, welding fumes, mould and many other substances and conditions workers encounter on the job.

The challenge is that the effects aren’t always immediate.

A worker may breathe in hazardous fibres, work around excessive noise or come into contact with harmful chemicals without experiencing obvious symptoms at the time. In some cases, the health effects of those exposures may not become apparent until much later.

Effective prevention starts with understanding the hazard, recognizing where exposure can occur and identifying the measures needed to eliminate it or control it at the source.

WHSC training is designed to build that practical knowledge and help workplace parties put prevention into practice.

Who should attend?

This training can benefit everyone in the workplace, including:
  • Workers who want to better recognize workplace hazards and understand how harmful exposures can be prevented.
  • Supervisors and employers responsible for protecting worker health and meeting workplace health and safety obligations.
  • Joint health and safety committee members, worker health and safety representatives and worker trades committee members working to identify hazards and strengthen prevention measures.

Why train with WHSC?

Safer and healthier work starts with understanding the hazards workers face and taking effective action to eliminate or control them.

For 40 years, WHSC has helped workplaces build the knowledge and skills needed to do exactly that.

Our training connects occupational health and safety requirements with the real conditions workers encounter on the job. Programs are participant-centred, grounded in current evidence and focused on practical prevention.

That means helping workplace parties understand how hazards arise, how workers can be exposed and what measures can be taken to eliminate hazards wherever possible or put effective controls in place when they can’t be eliminated.
