In case you missed it: A 2025 CSA study found Canada’s mental health crisis has worsened over the past decade, with rising rates of depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
An alarming state
Each year, one in five Canadians experiences a mental illness, and approximately 500,000 people are unable to work each week due to mental health issues. Work-related stress is a major contributor, with over 60 per cent of reported stress cases linked to job pressures—some surveys even suggest this number may be as high as 80 per cent. Mental health challenges now account for 70 per cent of workplace disability costs, more than double the previously reported 30 per cent. Overall, the economic impact is staggering, with current costs exceeding $200 billion annually and projections estimating a rise to $2.5 trillion by 2041.

What we know
Ontario employers and supervisors often don’t have enough resources and tools they need to fulfill their legal duty to safeguard worker well-being – traditional employee assistance programs and coping tools just don’t cut it on their own.
Employers have a crucial role to play in fostering positive mentally healthy environments for workers. The first step is acknowledging the workplace has a significant impact on the mental well-being of those connected to it. The second is to assess how existing structures, processes, and policies may be contributing to the deterioration of mental health and increasing psychosocial hazards – hours of work, job demands, autonomy over work, poor organizational support and issues of workplace violence and harassment.
Fortunately, many work-related hazards that contribute to mental injuries and illnesses can be identified and eliminated. With this information in hand, employers can prioritize prevention through
practical training and foster a mentally healthy workplace by developing occupational health and safety programs that proactively support mental health.
