Workers Health & Safety Centre

Mandatory supervisor training…save 50% if you book now!

Workers Health & Safety Centre is making it more affordable to prioritize supervisor competency and better protect workers by offering training at half price for a limited time.

Not only is supervisor training mandatory, but it is also critical to the pursuit of safer, healthier work. Consider research undertaken by Ontario-based Institute for Work & Health confirming supervisors who are aware of workplace hazards and actively promote safety can reduce the likelihood of workers suffering an injury or illness.

This is why it’s essential for employers to meet their legal obligation to ensure their supervisors are adequately trained and competent.

Mandatory training & competent supervision

Ontario’s Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) requires employers ensure supervisors complete occupational health and safety awareness training. Training must be completed within one week of performing work as a supervisor and must address a wide range of topics, including their significant obligations to protect workers and how to recognize, assess and control workplace hazards.

Employers must also only appoint a competent person as a supervisor. This person must be:
  • qualified because of knowledge, training and experience to organize the work and its performance,
  • familiar with the OHSA and Regulations that apply to the work, and
  • knowledgeable about any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace.

Competency is also important as it relates to Criminal Code amendments that resulted from Bill C-45, known as the Westray Bill. This established rules for attributing criminal liability to organizations and individuals, including supervisors, who direct the work of others but do not take reasonable steps to prevent bodily harm and instead show a wanton and reckless disregard for workers’ lives and safety (s. 217.1 and 219). Earlier this year, a Toronto-area supervisor was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of criminal negligence causing the death of a worker.
