Has your JHSC certification expired? Refresher training is a must!

Joint health and safety committee (JHSC) members who are certified must take an approved refresher training program every three years to maintain certification status.

Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) and its training regulation requires employers to pay for this refresher training and the time to participate in it. Though, they must first pay for at least two members of a JHSC, one worker and one manager, to successfully complete JHSC Certification Part I and Part II training programs. All programs in the Certification training process must be approved by the Ontario government’s Chief Prevention Officer (CPO).

It is important to note, failing to meet JHSC refresher training obligations will require employers to restart the Certification process, fully retraining JHSC members in Certification Part I and Part II training.

With these obligations in mind, and year-end approaching, many workplaces are undertaking reviews of their occupational health and safety programs. Start the New Year right with Ontario’s best, CPO-approved Certification training programs.

Employer obligations for JHSCs and certification

In Ontario, most workplaces with 20 or more workers or using a designated substance must establish a JHSC consisting of at least one worker and one employer member. Again, at least two members of a JHSC – one worker and one manager – must become and remain certified by completing Part I,
Part II and Refresher training.

Certification Part I training comprises a comprehensive review of occupational health and safety legislation. This includes exploring the rights and responsibilities of all workplace parties with a specific emphasis on those of JHSC members, particularly certified members. Also explored is the process for identifying, assessing and controlling, or better yet eliminating, workplace hazards.

Certification Part II involves a deeper dive into sector and workplace-specific hazards and measures to protect workers. WHSC offers general Part II training
as well as sector specific options including those for construction, manufacturing, education and health care and social services. This training must be taken within 12 months of completing Part I.

Certification Refresher revisits key information from Part I and Part II and explores new or amended legislation/guidelines/standards, pressing or emerging issues, plus the most up-to-date measures for hazard elimination and control. Again, this training is required within three years of completing Part II and every three years thereafter.
