WHSC Courses Accredited for Water Works Operators

The Ontario Water Wastewater Certification Office (OWWCO) has recently accredited six Workers Health & Safety Centre training courses. The decision effectively gives water operators and wastewater operators the choice of earning required continuing educational units (CEUs) by taking the WHSC’s high-quality training.

OWWCO was set up after the Walkerton tragedy to ensure the competence of water operators and waste water operators. The organization is accountable to Ontario’s Ministry of Environment. Among other things, OWWCO requires water operators and waste water operators to hold a certificate and participate in annual training that earns CEUs in order to maintain their certification.

Many Ontario municipalities operate their drinking water and waste water systems directly or through public utility commissions. Other municipalities contact the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA), a government of Ontario operating company, to manage their water and waste water operations.

The six WHSC courses currently accredited with OWWCO are:

Worker training:

  • Cranes, Hoists and Rigging – 0.6 CEUs (worker training)
  • Confined Spaces Entry Hazard Recognition – 0.6 CEUs (worker training)
  •  WHMIS: Our Right to Know – 0.6 CEUs (worker training)

Hazard awareness:

  • Forklift Trucks – 0.3 CEUs (hazard awareness)
  • Confined Spaces  - 0.3 CEUs (hazard awareness)
  • Lockout – 0.3 CEUs (hazard awareness)

WHSC is pursuing additional accreditations with OWWCO based on customer requests.

OWWCO accredited courses can be booked by contacting any one of our WHSC offices or calling 1-888-869-7950.
