Mourners at a Day of Mourning event in Ontario
Workers have the legal right to be protected from hazards on the job. When hazards go unaddressed, workers suffer the most.

Every April 28, a National Day of Mourning we remember workers who have been injured, made ill or killed on the job. On this day and every day, Workers Health & Safety Centre supports those who seek what the law promises, safe and healthy work.

This year again, WHSC is helping to promote Day of Mourning (DOM) events in communities across Ontario. This year’s campaign message encourages full employer accountability and meaningful worker participation in pursuit of safer, healthier work. Important supports for this pursuit include: laws and regulations that are specific and enforced; quality training focused on workplace hazards, not worker behaviours; and sufficient trusted resources to get the job done. As Ontario’s government-designated health and safety training centre, WHSC proudly develops and delivers the quality training and trusted resources upon which so many have come to depend.

A National Day of Mourning was first recognized by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984 to raise public awareness of worker injury, illness and death. More than 100 countries now observe a Day of Mourning.
